College Dorm Organization Tips For Your Son
How many of you have looked on Pinterest or other websites trying to get an idea of how to organize a guy’s dorm? I sure have and I’m telling you, I have had a hard time. So, I decided to reach out to The Container Store to help me create some college dorm organization tips for your son. And by the way, they are giving 20% off to college students and parents ( July 18-August 18). Just sign up here and receive your coupon.
Well, as I am sure most of you moms can attest, my son is not known to be the most organized person around. So, my goal is to help make his life a little easier and let him focus on schoolwork (yeah right). I’m quite certain when I return to Ole Miss in the Fall all of this will be for naught but at least I tried right? #mamatried
When deciding on items for his dorm, I wanted to go with items that would last and are super durable. The Container Store has such great quality products so I knew I was in good hands.
The first thing I always do when organizing a space is I pick out what I call “anchor pieces”. These are just pieces that I use as a starting point that I can build from in my brain. The first item I bought was the Dark Grey 3-Tier Rolling Cart. This will be so easy for he and his roommate to maneuver around the entire space.
I filled the cart with storage containers in various sizes to hold items such as granola bars, oatmeal, cereal, shake powder, popcorn and other snacks. Here are the ones I decided to use:
Once I got a handle on the food storage, I went to desk essentials. I knew he didn’t want a bunch of clutter on his desk so I just bought this Desktop Organizer:
This Zippered Pouch is going to hold all of his important documents such as health insurance info, car insurance documents and any other “in case of emergency” documents:
I wanted my son to have some places to write on and stick items on the wall so I bought him a Dry Erase Board and a Cork Board:
As far as his closet goes, I wanted to keep his shoes from being thrown all over the floor and driving his roommate crazy so I bought 12 of these amazing Shoe Boxes. They have a front door opening so they are super easy to access the shoes.
I bought two Navy Storage Containers mainly because I thought they looked cool. I am certain my son will find something to fill them with.
To maximize hanging space, I bought a 4-tier drop hanger for pants and a 6-tier drop hanger for shirts:
I purchased 40 of the Navy Blue Tubular Hangers:
I purchased a Jumbo Box Storage Container kind of as a catch-all for the closet as well. I am hoping he doesn’t just throw trash in it! LOL
Then I moved on to the bathroom. I wanted to make sure the space was maximized and that there were places to put cleaning supplies, towels, toilet paper and such. I found this White SoHo Shelving System and it will fit the space perfectly. I also bought Nickel Hooks to hang their towels up when they are wet.
I bought these “manly” Charcoal Nordic Storage Baskets LOL to place on the white shelving in the bathroom. I thought they would be great to keep the guys dopp kits and all of their shower goodies.
Now, to hang all of the decor I have purchased. As I’m sure you are aware, most colleges will not let you nail anything into the walls. So, I am going to be using a ton of 3M Command Strips. I bought a couple packs of the black strips and I bet I will be buying more once I get to Oxford.
I am super excited to get all of this set up in his dorm. He will not be moving in until August 21st so I have to leave you hanging until then. At least you have some ideas of what to buy your son or daughter. I will be sure to upload another post of the dorm all decorated and organized. I hope you have found this helpful; I know I sure wish I had this when I started. Be blessed friends.
I love everything you chose Tracy! He will be so organized for college! The Container Store seriously has everything!
Thanks so much friend! I hope it helps him at least a little bit.
Hello! This is my 1st comment here so I just wanted to give a quick
shout out and say I really enjoy reading through your posts.
Can you suggest any other blogs/websites/forums that go over the
same topics? Thanks a ton!
Joyfully Rooted is a great blog. So is Thistlewood Farms. Those are just a couple. Hope this helps.
Good day! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice
from an established blog. Is it very hard to set up your
own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick.
I’m thinking about creating my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any ideas or suggestions?
Many thanks
